About SBS (Special Broadcast Services)
The principal function of SBS is to provide multilingual and multicultural radio and television services to inform, educate and entertain all Australians. Since its inception in 1978, SBS has grown to broadcast in over 100 languages, reaching more than 7 million Australians each week.
In 2010, SBS introduced a digital file system for television content, but most pre-2010 content remains on videotape, including news, current affairs, NITV, entertainment and sports content.
With its high reliance on videotape presents challenges to SBS – inefficiencies of managing physical media in a file-based environment and risk to content due to aging physical media.
A comprehensive solution that includes:
- Cleaning and preparation of all media due to the age and condition of some of the media.
- Data management of SBS's comprehensive collection database.
- The creation of three file formats simultaneously, which included JPEG2000, DV50 and H.264.
- Archiving the collection to LTO5 data tape, and LTO6 in later phases, and replicated for redundancy.
- For phase one, we also provided SBS with an interim control and access solution for the digitised content build on Mediaflex and StorageDNA's LTO archiving platform.
About National Archives of Australia
The National Archives of Australia (NAA) has responsibility under the Commonwealth Archives Act 1983 for the preservation, conservation and storage of all Commonwealth records, including the archival resources of the Commonwealth.
The NAA audiovisual collection includes approximately 82,500 hours of audio and 124,500 hours of video recordings on obsolete magnetic tape formats, which must be digitised soon to avoid permanent loss. In late 2016, NAA contracted DAMsmart for a 3-year period to provide specialist media conservation and mass digitisation services to preserve these valuable collections.
A comprehensive solution that includes:
- Approximately 15,000 video tapes and 5,500 audio tapes were temporarily relocated to Canberra for the project.
- An intensive cleaning and preparation programme was implemented for tapes in poor condition to ensure optimal replay and signal recovery.
- The collection was digitized using automated and semi-automated workflows.
- Two digital profiles were created for all content: Lossless JPEG2000 and MPEG4 H.264 for video, Broadcast WAV for audio.
- A quality control workflow was developed, providing preservation-compliant files and quality control reports for all tapes.
- The digitized collection was returned on LT06/LTFS for incorporation into NAA's digital preservation platform.
